Today is the D-Day, the International Women’s Day. It’s a day of celebration of women’s courage, their empowerment. And in India, women’s role in development of society too is phenomenal. Gone are the days when they were forced to remain home bound and barred from participating in numerous activities. Today women have come out the shackles of their restrictions and are now spreading their wings just like phoenix. They are chasing the impossible. Be it adventure sport or running a flight, they have undertaken the tasks which were absolute no-no for them at some point of time.
Women’s plight in India is known to everyone. She was a victim of Sati where women were burnt alive in their husbands’ pyre. She was forced into marriage at an age when she was supposed to play with dolls. She was tortured and she was battered in the name of dowry. And the list of women’s violence is a pretty long. To ameliorate their condition and to make them aware of their own rights, International Year of Women was first declared. It was in the year 1995. They have been awakened from deep slumber and they kept moving at faster rate. And there was no looking back for them.
Our country’s development depends on woman’s empowerment. Indeed, man and woman are just like a cart’s two wheels. A cart is able to move fast only if both of the wheels move in same direction. If man is a bow, a woman is an arrow. One’s existence is meaningless without the other one. Hence, no society should dare to ignore women’s role in its progress. If it does, it cannot be called a progressive one.
Changing status of Women
That women came out of the comfort zone of their houses and shouldered responsibilities of their male counterparts was not a recent phenomenon. During Indian Freedom struggle movement, when most of their male fighters were in the prison, women took up the baton to initiate the freedom struggle amongst the British officials. In Independent India too, women hold prestigious posts in different arenas. They have served as Prime Minister, President, Governor, Speaker of Lok Sabha and what not. The soft hand that runs the cradle even runs the society. And this applies to a woman.Women’s plight in India is known to everyone. Women in different roles
21st century is the century of women. You name a field and you find a successful woman. There is a common saying that behind a successful man there is a woman. And woman herself writes her own success story. Be it in the field of sports, medicine, and engineering and even in business, the contribution of a woman is incomparable. Our country’s development depends on woman’s empowerment.
